Designers: build your portfolio through battle, maybe win a little money

Generally, we take a pretty dim view of design contests and things that cause people to do work on spec, but there are some websites where you can battle in public for graphic arts money, which seems a bit more interesting.

Some of you might want to use sites like these to build your portfolios, get some design exercise, and see how you shape up next to the competition. If you're in a place where US$300 is a lot of money, you might even make rent.

Read the fine print. Often this sort of work will result in "work for hire" art, which means the copyright is sold with the design. When you sell your copyright, you can't sell that design again, but you can usually display it in your portfolio or hang the original on your wall.

If you have a choice, licensing the "right to use" your work is a better plan. That way when the license expires, the work belongs to you again. Of course, legal and copyright law likely varies by country.

Kase 2 memorial page - call for images

I'd be very glad to archive some Kase 2 (Case2) memorial work on an Art Crimes page dedicated to him, along with any original work of his that you'd care to contribute for posterity. Certainly the King of Style deserves as good as we can give him.

I know there are pages for him on corporate-owned Facebook and Flickr, but you never know what might happen to those.

It's important to get permission to repost them, so if you send something that isn't yours, please say who it belongs to or who posted it originally so that I can try to get permission.

Please send JPG images via email to info@graffiti.org as attachments.

Thank you.

In the meantime, please enjoy this wonderful tribute by INX and CHE in Houston, Texas:

Call for artists: Hammond, IN Deadline Oct. 1, 2011: Day of the Dead Altar

Arte Muerte

“Arte Muerte” is CISA Gallery’s annual Day of the Dead altar exhibition. The exhibit will run from October 14, 2011 through November 4, 2011 with a festive reception on Wednesday, November 2, 2011, Starting at 6 p.m. We are currently seeking artists, entertainment, and sponsors.

IMPORTANT DATES

  • October 1st: Deadline for submissions
  • October 8th: Artist / Altar assignments / Installations
  • October 14th: Exhibit opens
  • November 2nd: "Arte Muerte" Reception! (Traditional Food, Refreshments, Music, Art and Dance)
  • November 4th: Exhibit Ends

We are looking for artists to install traditional altars as well as contemporary visions of honoring our deceased ones. Our deadline for submissions is Saturday, October 1st, 2011.

We are looking for entertainment to provide a festive atmosphere during the November 2nd reception. We are open to ideas and welcome contemporary approaches in honoring this day.

We recognize the economy has limited the dollar amount many can use to sponsor. Our objective is to include as many as we can in the art of making a successful reception. Sponsorship is available in many ways. In the past sponsors have: contributed to our huge banquet that’s free to the public, sponsored individual artists with monetary contributions, and larger businesses have purchased wall space for their business logo. If you are interested, please contact CISA Studio with the contact information provided in the press release.

About the Day of the Dead (Dia De Los Muertos):

The celebration occurs on November 2 in connection with the Catholic holidays of All Saints’ Day (November 1) and All Soul’s Day (November 2). Although the date was set by Pope Urban II in 1095, the celebration dates back to pre-hispanic Mexico. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. Traditions connected with the holiday include building private altars honoring the deceased using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed and visiting graves with these as gifts. Due to occurring shortly after Halloween, the Day of the Dead is sometimes thought to be a similar holiday, although the two actually have little in common. The Day of the Dead is a time of celebration, where partying is common.

Call for artists worldwide: Virtual exhibit

Art Un-Scene

Beginning on May 20, 2011 the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles, California will be the site of Art Un-Scene, an exhibition of street art in Augmented Reality (AR). Street artists and graffiti writers worldwide are invited to submit digital photographs of their work, which will be uploaded into AR-space around MOCA's location for public viewing.

The exhibition will be "hidden in plain sight," invisible to the unaided eye, and can only be viewed using a modern smartphone (iPhone, iPad2 or various Android devices) and the Layar Augmented Reality Browser app. The AR exhibition will run in parallel with MOCA's curated "Art in the Streets" show, but MOCA is not involved in any way with this event. We hope and intend that this AR exhibition will add much needed breadth and depth to the "official" story of street art that is being offered by MOCA's curators.

Artists who want to learn more about the Art Un-Scene exhibition and submit images of their work should visit the website http://spacelib.org/unscene and email their images of work in any medium to: spaceliberation@gmail.com along with links to websites where more work can be seen, if available.

Art Un-Scene is being produced by the Space Liberation Movement, with in-kind assistance from Layar BV.

Were you left out of the MOCA show? Now's your chance to be included in this virtual exhibition. Check out the links above to learn more about Space Liberation Movement and Layar augmented reality browser for smartphones and tablets.

Call for artists: Deadline February 1, 2011: Reuse & Resist!

REUSE PROJECT 4: REUSE & RESIST! Open Call For Art!!

REUSE PROJECT 4: REUSE & RESIST! Open Call For Art until Feb. 1st! www.reuseandresist.tk
What is the ReUse Project? Every year, for the past 4 years, INSPIRE Collective has made a call for art, taken a centralized public building, and installed as much artwork inside & outside as possible, then we open the doors to the public!
Want to get involved this time around? Just keep reading…

There is a better way, no matter what they say! Present-day cities, the world over, have massive percentages of un-used & generally neglected public space. By itself, this fact quickly becomes its own negative social issue & it isn’t a phenomenon, it’s a disgusting norm of all industrialized cities at this point. WE MUST REUSE AND RESIST!!
But how?! Many social issues could be already solved by ReUsing & re-thinking public space. This year, let’s stop talking about it and started getting things done!

INSPIRE Collective would like to extend this call for art around the world, so if you know folks who would like to get involved…We extend the invitation to all creators to participate in ReUse

Project 4: REUSE AND RESIST!

If you’re a conscious artist living on this planet and you can creatively relate to the ideas of ReThinking and ReUsing, then this exhibition is for you! Help us to make a positive social statement here in the Middle East & sustainable, independent artists will help to make this necessary statement world-wide. Open call for art ends February 1st.
For participation inquiries, entry submissions, call for art info, etc., please visit:
www.reuseandresist.tk
Also, for INSPIRE Collective past events and more: www.inspirecollectiveevents.tk
