UK London: 6th April – 6th May 2012: PEZ

PEZ

Smiling since 1999

6th April – 6th May 2012

Tonyʼs Gallery is delighted to present “Smiling Since 1999″ – the first UK solo exhibition by the legendary Spanish street artist PEZ.

PEZ first started painting his iconic ‘smiling fishʼ logo in the streets of Barcelona in 1999 and has since established a worldwide reputation with exhibitions in Europe, America and Asia. Now PEZ is bringing his happy and fun style to London for his exhibition at Tony’s which will celebrate his work and bring some colour and cheer to the streets of the capital.

PEZ currently lives and works in Bogota (Colombia) and will draw inspiration from his country of residence to develop his solo show at Tony’s by creating a Colombian beach bar installation within the gallery space.

The exhibition will feature an in-situ mural presenting PEZ’s recognisable fish jumping in from the street walls outside onto the canvases within the gallery, alongside a direct intervention onto the gallery walls and a selection of new works including canvases and limited edition screen prints.

Visitors to the gallery will be able to experience positive vibes from PEZ’s smiling fish artworks and enjoy the chilled out atmosphere of the PEZ BAR.

Look out for PEZ’s fish as they will be popping up in all kinds of unlikely places around Shoreditch over the next month.

UK, London: Dec. 1-4, 2011: XENZ: Cloud Cuckoo Land

XENZ presents:
Cloud Cuckoo Land
A Solo Show
London December 1-4, 2011

PRIVATE VIEW: Thursday December 1 / 18:00-22:00. After Party: 22:30-01:00 (no entry after 22:00)

PUBLIC VIEW: Friday, December 2 to Sunday, December 4 / 12:00-18:00

British artist, Xenz presents a new major solo show, Cloud Cuckoo Land in London this December.

Famed for his graffiti murals, the artist exhibits a beautiful collection of new landscape paintings which immerse the viewer in an undiscovered world filled with exotic species drawn from the vivid depths of his imagination.

Xenz offers a panoramic view of his fantasy world, presenting a strange utopia where peculiar plants, insects and birds are sighted among the tropical lagoons of moonlit forests. But with the satirical slant of an artist who paints from a dark, gritty warehouse in Hackney Wick, viewers can expect some interesting twists.

Cloud Cuckoo Land shows a body of work created over the last two years. In addition to a new collection of paintings and prints, Xenz's newest work has seen him experiment with scale by painting on large-scale murals that divide into smaller, compact and highly-desirable pieces. Xenz successfully marries fine art with urban art forms, using the spray can to capture fragments of memory and subject matter often drawn from the natural world. A love of ornithology and a search for ever-exotic wildlife has led to this greater evolution of the artist's work.

Xenz explains: "Cloud Cuckoo Land is a kind of childhood fantasy of setting sail to discover a lost world, but ending up in an opium den in Singapore. It's a celebration of creativity; something happy and joyful, but with a slight twist. I suppose living as an artist is seen as living in cloud cuckoo land by many people and I want to celebrate this by showing people what my dreams look like. Scientists estimate that there are more than 7 million undiscovered species on the planet — that's inspiration right there!"

An extraordinary cohesion between mind, memory and spray can, allows this influential artist to walk up to a wall or canvas and paint epic landscapes and fantasy dreamscapes from his imagination. Offering a sense of escapism, a Xenz painting has universal appeal, and in the last two years alone, his work has been commissioned for a show by the British Council in India, exhibited globally from Australia to Ibiza, and his work hangs in mud huts in Gambia to celebrity homes in Chelsea.

Xenz paints landscapes imbued with escapism and symbolism and his background in graffiti is still evident. Look closely at a Xenz composition and you might find the letters of his tag worked into the twisted vines or the rocks in a waterfall. "It's like a game, trying to decipher the code," he says. "All my work is about escapism: the exotic and that vein. It's about freedom and I suppose I'm trying to preserve a sense of value in art. I like to create work that takes you somewhere; a picture that takes a few moments more to soak up than an instant slogan or striking image."

Xenz's last solo show, Pecking Disorder was at Lazarides in Newcastle in March, 2011.

Cloud Cuckoo land opens with a private view on

Germany, Berlin: Sept. 23 - Nov. 12, 2011: MODE 2

[Mode 2, old-school King of Characters! Get ready, and expect it to sell out. His work tends toward the sexually explicit these days, so keep that in mind before you go. (I won't show you the flyer!) No one loves the female form like Mode 2 does. If you're brave and old enough, here's a set on Flickr from Mode 2's 2009 show - Susan]

UK, London: November 4 - 6, 2011: Heaven & Earth

Acclaimed British surrealist graffiti artist Sickboy returns this November with his second major London solo show:

Heaven & Earth

A celebration of earthly sins and heavenly fantasies, with collaborations from some of the biggest names in the global scene, Heaven & Earth sees Sickboy figuratively fall from grace into one of his own worlds, calling upon 12 art figureheads to plunge into the depths of darkest conscious.

Those familiar with Sickboy's prolific street work such as the iconic 'Temple' (sprayed in the McDonalds palette on walls and wheelie bins worldwide) will witness the deeper development of the artist's visual vocabulary with his new body of work. Inspired by semiotics and symbolism, Renaissance paintings and the surreal landscape workings of artists like Hieronymus Bosch, Sickboy confesses all in this show, with meticulously-detailed paintings containing deeply personal narratives alongside his surrealist depictions of the world.

The artist also presents four major installations which include a walk-in confessional booth (with a resident pastor who will be appearing at various service times throughout the opening), and an installation which sees a who's who of eminent artists joining Sickboy on his cathartic journey including: D*Face, Eine, Anthony Lister, Paul Insect, Vhils, Conor Harrington, Xenz, Word to Mother, Will Barras, Eelus, Mudwig and Hush – all of whom feature in a special collaborative element of the show.

The art exorcism doesn't just end there. After years of brainwashing the public with his temple and slogans such as 'Save the Youth', Sickboy is expanding his ethos of 'art for the people' and inviting the global public to become part of his show by submitting their anonymous confessions to him, which will become one of the main installations, entitled CONFESS.

Dray Walk, The Old Truman Brewery, 91 Brick Lane, London, E1 6QL.

Private view Thursday 3rd November 18:00-22:00
Open to the public Friday 4th November - Sunday 6th November 12:00-19:00

UK, London: Robbo Fundraising Auction Preview Sept 1 2011

ROBBO benefit
From Pure Evil Gallery:
"We’ve just started putting up a few of the pieces handed in so far for the Preview of the ROBBO auction @ Pure Evil Gallery
The preview of the auction opens Thursday evening at 6pm but some images of the work donated so far is up already because we want to get on it straight away… so far we have already raised abut £25,000 selling paintings and prints which is going towards Robbo and his family… he has a baby who is 1 year and 8 months old and other children and we’re trying to help the family out.
The guy is in a coma still, but he seems to be responding to some commands… anyone who has speculated about his injury and what actually happened to put him in hospital heres the scoop : He fell outside his house and hit his head really badly on some stone steps and he has been in hospital ever since.
I don't care about the graffiti / street art politics behind Banksy vs Robbo thats just a falling out between 2 painters. In the bigger picture of things its meaningless . This is more important than all that, we’re just trying to help out a mate. He’s no angel but he’s had a hard knock (literally) and he needs our help.

UK, London: Feb. 17 2011: Safewalls

SAFEWALLS

SAFEWALLS is an artistic project curated by Cirque du Soleil that is bringing time-honoured circus posters into the 21st century by pairing up with renowned international street art and lowbrow artists (lowbrow is an artistic movement that uses the graphic codes of popular genres such as comics, advertising, graffiti and anything not considered fine arts). This project celebrates the roots of Cirque du Soleil—the street—as well as the creative freedom and raw energy associated with street arts.

The term "safe walls" refers to legal spots in the urban landscape for local street artists to do their work without the fear of sanctions. SAFEWALLS commissions urban artists from all over the world to create daring and original posters inspired by Cirque du Soleil shows. In addition to being displayed in predetermined cities where Cirque du Soleil is presenting one of its big top shows, the final artworks will be used for the production of limited-edition, signed and numbered posters Each month—for a period of 12 months—three artists will be commissioned in each city to create a poster inspired by the show. The posters will travel the world and the exhibit will be cumulative, growing in size as works of previous cities are added to the collection.

The works can also be seen online on safewalls.org and during public events.
