New collectible for a cause: Blade I bobblehead figure

      [GrafKing Shadow]

JOIN TOGETHER ENTERPRISES (BROOKLYN) The Golden Age of Graffiti ("GAG"), a subdivision of Join2Gether Enterprises (J2G), announces the release of a first-ever Bobblehead Doll of the renowned Graffiti artist Blade I.

The creation of the bobbleheads is a collaboration between Blade I and GrafKing Shadow, a member of The Rebels (Graf Crew 1973-1979).

[approximately 8 inches (20 cm) tall]

Shadow is featured in Stations of the Elevated, Manny Kirshner's groundbreaking graffiti documentary, and in the recent "Graffiti 365" (p. 167) at the most famous Graf high school ever -- Art & Design.

J2G is a community-based organization in the Fort Greene/Clinton Hill area of Brooklyn. We are merchandisers of retro/Americana clothing and items of memorabilia, blending old and new elements into a fashionable statement with a nostalgic note. Through sales of the bobblehead dolls, we plan to raise funding for youth-oriented (anti-felony) art programs. A part of our goal is to give graf a positive image.

Your artwork, on top of buses in London

NJ, Trenton and Pine Brook: Spring 2012 graffiti art classes

France, Paris: February 2012: Cope 2

Cope 2 * 18 February - 1 March * Galerie Mathgoth

Cope 2 * 11 February * Hotel Marcel Dassault

"Sixteen months after his first exhibition in Paris (Burning Hearts in November 2010), the famous graffiti artist Cope 2 presents New York for the second time in Paris. MathGoth proposed by the gallery, the exhibition Defiance meet from February 18 to March 1 works of an international graffiti legends whose work, not settle down, now combines the techniques of graffiti with the dexterity of brush or collages.

No denial in the work of Cope2: the king with his bubbles markers and bombs remains at the heart of each of the paintings but with new spaces and new technology investment. A real change in his work already begun in his first exhibition in Paris Burning Hearts, in November 2010, when appeared the first signs of a burgeoning style.

Now focusing on studio work, more thorough, deeper Cope2 this for a very accomplished performance. Exit the metro line 4 in New York debut, the canvas is now her favorite material, which contributes to the accessibility of the artist in the defying paradox of street art. Cope2 has become a real painter workshop with the rigor and torments involved.

Australia, Melbourne & Sydney: February-March, 2012: Mark Bode

For two generations Mark and his father Vaughn Bode have forged an artistic legacy that has had a profound effect on graffiti, street art and underground comics.

In the mid seventies, the iconoclastic Vaughn Bode's comic book characters, particularly Cheech Wizard resonated so closely with the revolutionary spirit of pioneering graffiti artist that these characters were adopted as the mascots of the movement, becoming the first used in graffiti.

In recent years Mark Bode, an accomplished graffiti artist, tattooist, illustrator and writer, has stretched the horizons of the Bode universe beyond imagination, creating several cult classic comics, perhaps the best known being Colbalt 60, which is currently slated by Zack Snyder for a live action film.

Bode is also something of a nexus for the world street art and graffiti art scene, the heir to the first graffiti characters, a genuinely positive visionary and a backbone of the community he has painted murals around the globe with an extended family consisting of the most respected graffiti and street artists.

For "Bode in Oz", In February Mark Bode will be taking a 2 week tour of Melbourne and Sydney, painting murals with Australian artists and exhibiting a collection of original work along with the performance of a Cartoon Concert in both cities.

CA, San Francisco: Feb. 10, 2012: The Truck Show

The modern box-style delivery truck lives in the inner cities all across America. For the modern day graffiti writer it is a contemporary relative to the subway cars of the '70s and '80s which helped spark the explosion of graffiti. In a state of eminent relocation, they assemble a disjointed gallery of ceaseless unrest, a perfect canvas for any opportunistic writer. Pristine new clean white box trucks not only invite as they call it “the application of a medium” to their surface, but beg for it. In the streets delivery trucks fit best after being worn and weathered as a pair of old shoes with scuff marks and layers of historical remnants. In an attempt to keep their truck looking new, many truck owners will opt to give a graffiti writer permission to assume control over this valuable real estate in the urban landscape.

The truck show is an homage to this modern Icon of graffiti and seeks to display these moving masterpieces to the public through the filter of a Gallery. On display in the purest form, without the distractions of the city or the fact that they are usually in motion. Isolating the image of a delivery truck on canvas extracts the truck from its normal environment and presents it as symbol of Graffiti, and how Graffiti is the only art form that uses moving machinery as canvases.

New York, NYC: Jan. 7 - Feb. 19, 2012: Rather Unique

Rather Unique
January 7th - February 19th 2012

New for 2012, Woodward Gallery invites Harlem-based street Artist Royce Bannon as their first-ever guest curator for an exhibition with rather unique art.

This exhibition will highlight a group of trendsetting artists who stand out in street and graffiti genres. The artists include: Cassius Fowler, Celso, Chris RWK, Cope2, Darkcloud, H.veng.Smith, Indie184, infinity, KA, Keely, Kenji Nakayama, Kosbe, Matt Siren, Moody, Nose Go, Royce B, Russell King, UR New York, Veng, and Wrona.

While how they each create differs, they are commonly driven to share art with their peers without-constraints. This public focus has afforded the group to experiment and redefine their creativity with instant feedback and inspiration from colleagues.

Bannon selected these few for their resolve and commitment. They have worked obsessively over the years to get their public art recognized.

Woodward Gallery acknowledges these most contemporary of artists and their contribution to the new world of art.

Why all the non-graffiti posts?

I've been posting a lot about freedom, liberty, privacy, and censorship because if we don't act to save the internet and our countries from corporate and authoritarian control now, we might not get the chance to do it again.

The laws that corporations are paying lawmakers to enact threaten networked civilization, globally. Anything that criminalizes painting and showing cartoon characters and other popular culture themes in art threatens graffiti, and it threatens Art Crimes.

Please educate yourselves about these issues because your future depends on you doing smart things now to protect yourselves and all of us, through taking positive action to raise some hell while you still can.

Google plans to track you all across its web property, and you can't opt out

Google's new "privacy" policy - Washington Post explains.

Some Google employees are upset, but boss says, my way or the highway.

Here are some things you can do.

Get Firefox
Get DuckDuckGo search plugin

Log out of Google, YouTube, Picassa, Blogger, Gmail, G+, and so on, when you're done using one, so you're not dragging your browsing history around for them to collect.

Sure, it's a tiny hassle to log back in, but you can keep your passwords in a password safe app on your phone.

(You're not reusing your passwords, are you?? Good. Because passwords keep getting posted publicly on the internet.)

Your activities are being collected by DoubleClick, which Google owns also, and Google ads, even when you are not on a Google-owned website.

So get an ad blocker too. Adblock Plus is great.

ACTA is also a worldwide problem - find out more

Graffiti in the news

Welcome back to another edition of 'Graffiti in the news'.

First off, a piece that underscores the global spread of graffiti culture:
Photo by V.V. Krishnan / The Hindu

The Hindu: Writing on the wall
Driving through Delhi roads in recent times, the splashes of colour are hard to miss. The writing seems to have sprung up in several places, almost overnight, providing a colourful respite from the grey and drab buildings.

The relatively new culture of graffiti is fast spreading not just in the city, but throughout the country. Is this just the new thing in vogue, or does graffiti hold promise as a form of expression to reach out to a mass audience?

Next, in the U.S. state of Virginia, a recognition of graffiti with historical value:
Photo by the Culpeper Star Exponent

Culpeper Star Exponent: Civil War graffiti exposed
With the steady hands of a surgeon, architectural conservator Chris Mills slowly unveils history one painstaking step at a time.  His end goals—reveal and protect the Civil War era signatures, drawings and scribbling strewn throughout the Brandy Station Graffiti House.

The circa 1858 structure is believed to have been used as a hospital by Confederate and Union forces during the war. For unknown reasons, patrons decided to mark up the walls with signatures, drawings and anything else that crossed their minds.  Mills' challenge is to remove the post-historic paint and whitewash that subsequent owners' attempted to cover the markings with, as well as stabilize the fragile plaster.

And finally, back in Canada:
Images of the Rick Mercer Report/CBC courtesy of the National Post

National Post: Rick Mercer's rants damaging anti-graffiti cause: Mississauga councillor
"Rick Mercer needs to know that he's not doing anybody any good with his rants down the graffiti-tagged alley," Ms. Mahoney fumed during a city council meeting Wednesday, suggesting the Mercer rants may have unintentionally encouraged the spread of graffiti throughout Canada.

"That's not helping the cause across the country," she said.

But wait, there's more...

Metro News: Councillor can't tag this on Mercer
"My rants are shot in an artist-friendly laneway. These are fabulous, vibrant, constantly-changing works of art," Mercer wrote in an email to the Star. "I would wager many of those artists will be remembered long after the good councillor, who's (sic) name escapes me."

...

Mahoney added that she wasn't aware until after she made her comments that Graffiti Alley, located near Queen St. W. and Spadina Ave., is exempt from any graffiti bylaw and sanctioned as an area of "municipal significance" by Toronto city hall.

So it looks like Rick Mercer is helping the cause after all, just not the cause Katie Mahoney would like.

Booya!

Dutch teen, Laura Dekker, completes her sail-around-the-world solo trip!

AZ, Phoenix: Feb. 3-?, 2012: Kaper solo show!

Estimating things

Good day.  I've been absent lately while real life (and winter) have intruded on the artistic practice.  But now I have a few things to share.

A while back I wrote about blogger Christine Estima and her widely circulated work in local weekly The Grid.  In the meantime she has continued to document street art things, including the only photo I've seen that shows the remains of the Some Conditions Apply stencil underneath Joel Richardson's mural at Lansdowne and Dupont.

Here's the photo I took right after doing the stencil, before Joel's mural was restored:

And here's one that Christine took afterward, where it just barely peeks through:

I will be interested to see how it ages.

Christine has also captured a bunch of the Things stencils around town:
